Art and Network Analysis

It was interesting to me how broadly network analysis could be applied to different subject areas like arts and the humanities. I was curious about MOMA’s abstraction exhibition and explored how it integrated technology.

The project designed artists as nodes and social connections as edges. The relationships between nodes are symmetric and go both ways while the edges are inferred and undirected. Site visitors can click on an artist’s node and be taken to an ego-network with the creator at the center. They are able to view the artist’s social circle as well as other pieces of metadata like their locations and time period. This impacts engagement since the audience focuses more on the artist’s relationships with others than their creative pieces.

Unfortunately I could not find documentation on how the project was created and the techniques that were used.
