On Monday, February 22 we met with Nat Wilson from the Library Archives. He told us where to find more information about the traditions we are looking to work with, and volunteered to give us feedback by Thursday on which traditions we will be able to find information about in the Archives. A lot of the material we may be interested in isn’t digitized at the moment, but Nat offered to scan 20-30 things for us if we found information we were interested in that isn’t currently online. One thing we realized through talking with him is that we should focus our energy on finding pictures and short videos of traditions instead of trying to edit longer videos and audio clips. After our meeting with Nat, we created a spreadsheet with all the Carleton traditions we’re interested in, along with their approximate start dates and a brief description of the event. We also filled out the domain form.
After our last post we ran into a problem of linearity and had to adjust our project, so users could interact with the project in different ways. To fix this problem of linearity, we thought that it would be helpful to have separate pages for each tradition with a brief description attached. We also realized that it was overly ambitious and complicated to try and do the map, timeline, and separate pages for each tradition so we decided to focus on the timeline and the pages for each tradition. This change means that we would likely not use ArcGis anymore and just use TimelineJS and use WordPress for the individual tradition pages.
Updated timeline of the project:
- Week 8: Finalize our list of traditions, gather all of our sources, pictures and videos for our project.
- Week 9: Setup WordPress. Create the timeline and individual pages of information for each tradition within our WordPress site.
- Week 10: Final touches, work on the Pecha Kucha presentation. Project should be published by Tuesday, March 9. The final version of the project will be available by March 15.

Your project is really taking shape! The decision to focus in on the timeline was a good one, allowing an interactive and clean temporal way in to the great images and qualitative finds you’ve made. Sounds like Nat found some good material for you in the archives as well.
My main suggestion concerns the presentation on your website, which is already looking good. The current theme is very blog like, with posts organized primarily chronologically by date/time posted. For the nature of your material, provided thematic navigation would probably make more sense. I’d suggest adding some categories or tags to each post so users can find subjects of interest. If you kept the themes to 6 or fewer, you could also add them as groups on the timeline and maybe standardize the background colors by theme?
I think a wordpress theme that allowed single column pages would be a good move too, since you could embed the timeline large on the home page, instead of leading with a list of recent posts.
