Our Final Project!

Grace, Ray, Dominic, David, Henrie, Ethan

For our project, we will be producing two maps in ArcGIS: one of where Carleton students are from, and one of where alumni live. We hope to analyze these maps in conversation with one another to see how where students are from feeds into the geography of the alumni network, and vice versa. If we have time, we would also like to produce additional data visualizations, such as graphs, that we can incorporate into a Story Map to further analyze the data.

We plan on working in close collaboration with Carleton’s admissions office, career center, and alumni office to request the relevant data regarding students and alumni. Specifically, we are interested in each student’s state of origin, as well as the class year, current location, current industry, and major of each Carleton alumni. We plan on using ArcGIS Story Maps to visualize how this data changes over time. Time permitting, we hope to also utilize additional bar graphs and frequency analyses to provide further insight into these potential changes. For example, it may be interesting to explore how the average distance a given student body travels to get to Carleton changes over the years.

In terms of the timeline for the project, the first step will be reaching out to the admissions office, career center, and alumni office to see what data is available and what we have access to. We will do this as soon as possible, and hope to hear back by the middle of next week. Knowing what we are working with will have a big impact on our timeline, but we ideally hope to have our data organized in spreadsheets by February 24th. We hope to have completed the graphs by Monday, March 8th so as to prepare for our presentation on the 10th.

We hope this project will reveal how Carleton alumni have accumulated an international presence over time, and the increasing nationalization and internationalization of the student body. We also expect an increase in the number of STEM majors and alumni entering the STEM industry in the last 30 years.

  1. I am personally interested in the number of alumni that are in the arts industry. I hope the project will reveal trends in their current locations as well as majors at Carleton.

  2. Team WDTCFWDTG,

You all have a really clear sense of what you want to do, where the data are, and have made a great start this weekend in finding and cleaning those data. As you move from cleaning to exploratory data analysis, I highly recommend you check out Palladio for the initial work. It can be a little confusing at first, but they have Tutorials and FAQs and it’s ability to show maps, timelines and networks will open doors for what you eventually want to explain through a Storymap.

Previous students have looked at the Zoobook data to see how the Carleton population has changed with the times, but I really like your focus on where they went as well. What patterns can you identify between Carleton majors and eventual careers? Is that influenced by geography at all?

Flight maps of distribution overall will be great for context, but see if you can find some particular disciplines, careers, years, or regions to tell interesting stories that stand out from the data.

Finally, make sure to anonymize all student and alumni data so you don’t betray any privacy concerns! Looking forward to what you find!
