Carls Around The World

Authors: Grace Brindle, Dominic Enriquez, Henrie Friesen, Ethan Li, David Rubin, Ray Xu

For our final project, we decided to look at the geographic diversification of both Carleton’s student body as well as our alumni network over the years. We then questioned if there is a connection between the location of incoming Carleton students and the established alumni networks in the areas from which they come.

  1. Team WDTCFWDTG,

You all have done tremendous work from the jump on finding, cleaning and processing your data, and your website is nearly complete with most of it in evidence (including a github repo for your scripts and datasets!). I have just a few suggestions to finish things off.

    1. Provide a bit more framing on the website itself. Some more detail on the about page (taken from the storymap) would help those who navigate the menu rather than the map. Similarly, a sentence description of each author in addition to the links to pages would go far. The homepage currently devotes a lot of space to WELCOME! and has the embedded presentation which doesn’t give much info without your commentary. I suggest removing the presentation from that page and the headers, and just diving straight into the storymap. The presentation can go onto its own main nav page with a brief description of how it fits the overall project.

    2. Storymap: it’s great! So much good info here already, but a few tweaks would make it stronger. The heatmap requires a login so make sure everything is fully public. The slider maps are effective, but would be even more so if there was a legend or label on each side that clearly defined them, in addition to the caption text. Finally, the iframe embed itself would be more effective if full screen. I would suggest using an html block and wrapping the iframe tag with a div set to full width (i.e. give it an inline attribute style=”margin-left: calc(-50vw + 50%);margin-right: calc(-50vw + 50%);”) and change the iframe height to 800px so it fills most screens better.

    3. Process. You describe the data cleaning beautifully, but there is currently no discussion of geocoding, creating maps and compiling the storymap. How did the geographic analysis work?

With these changes, your project will fully shine.
