My first attempt at producing my house using SketchUp was overall a very positive experience! I have included two pictures of the house I grew up in Japan.
- How easy/hard was it?
I struggled a lot since this was my first time using SketchUp, so I would say the project was difficult. But it was fun!!
2. What elements particularly bogged you down?
I found it quite hard to build a house from scratch without knowing the next step. As someone mentioned in the last class, drawing my house on a paper beforehand would have been very helpful.
3. What compromises did you have to make?
The roof of the porch was supposed to have the same structure as the main house roof. However, I didn’t know how to copy and resize objects and had to give up.
4. What humanistic uses can you envision for this tool in the areas of research or teaching?
I think SketchUp can be a very useful tool for reconstructing structures that are lost/only documented.
5. What tip do you have for other novice SketchUp users about the tool that you found most useful, or a technique that you wish you had figured out sooner?
Don’t jump straight into your assignment! Look for resources and start with something quite simple!

I think this a beatuful home and an impressive model. I wish I could have looked at your tip before starting the assignment. Going head first into sketchup with no experience at all made it more challenging than what it had to be.
Love your house! I also really struggled with copying and resizing objects.
On a more important note, how did you make your balcony?
^I’m also curious as to how you created your balcony! It looks great!!
