I was fairly well equipped with SketchUp knowledge before this assignment, so I probably struggled less than most of my classmates. I spent some time scrolling through the online database of components looking for a dog bone for my dog house, but I was ultimately unsuccessful.
The worst part was probably having to use a touchpad for SketchUp, as Professor Mason mentioned during class, its much easier to navigate with a mouse.
Colors were the biggest compromise. The colors haven’t been greatly updated since I first used SketchUp, back when Google owned it and it shows. Every color was a compromise.
I think the most obvious use for SketchUp in the digital humanities is as a 3D modeling program for historic buildings and places.
My tip for novice SketchUp users: use a mouse and get used to the movement tools right off the bat. There might not be anything quite as frustrating as trying to use one of the more complicated tools and suddenly zooming 300 digital feet backwards in the program.
This looks great! I definitely had to do the same with the colors, it was between having siding and the actual correct color for me.
